Few Olympic commentators have made a lasting impression as deeply as Olympic figure skating champion Tara Lipinski and Olympic figure skater Johnny Weir.
The former figure skaters may seem like an unlikely duo on paper, but their passion for the sport and instant chemistry brought them together one fateful night while commentating different figure skating events for NBC. Lipinski described their first interaction as "kismet," a chat about handbags quickly turning into a pitch to NBC for them to commentate together during the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi. They nailed their broadcast audition, and they have led figure skating coverage for NBC Sports ever since.
"Our friendship and us being so in synch makes for a very seamless banter and our organic banter," Lipinski said. "We skated at different times, but there was a lot of similarities throughout our careers that I think we both identify with. We have those shared experiences. Both as amateur skaters, we were very authentic, and we showed up as ourselves. We weren't afraid to ruffle feathers here and there."
In the most recent episode of "Two Guys, Five Rings," an NBC Olympics podcast, Lipinski and Weir join Saturday Night Live cast member Bowen Yang and actor Matt Rogers to discuss their experiences at past Olympics and how their outfit coordination has evolved over the past 12 years. "We like to mix and match and make sure that we are sharing some similar elements in each broadcast," Lipinski said. While Lipinski and Weir are known for figure skating, their reach has extended beyond the Winter Olympics, such as covering the Closing Ceremony at the 2024 Paris Olympics and competing on the reality TV series The Traitors.
"Just the fact that we love having fun and experiencing new things," Weir said. "It's easy when we're together because I'm always going to be there to support Tara and she's always there for me. We're not afraid to try things. We find the fun and the humor in everything that we do. That's why we keep going. That's why we keep working."
Hear all of that and more on the latest episode of Two Guys, Five Rings.
