Team Shuster and Team Peterson officially clinched finals berths with their victories at the U.S. Olympic Curling Team Trials on Day 2.

Shuster eked out wins against Team Dropkin and Team Casper, thanks to a pair of thrilling come-from-behind efforts. It started in Session 3 when they trailed Team Dropkin 5-1 halfway through, but used a sixth-end three-point barrage to spark a run. They pulled away for a final of 7-5. In Session 4, Shuster found similar magic, again using a three-point sixth end to snatch the lead from Casper and ultimately put them away with a point in the 10th end.

Regardless of how they fare during their two remaining round-robin matchups on Day 3, the still undefeated Shuster is guaranteed a place in the men’s final.

Team Casper secured a win in their earlier matchup, routing Team Hebert 14-6 in eight ends. 14 is by far the most points tallied at the Team Trials so far.

Team Dropkin earned a victory in their later game, running up the score against Team Hebert for a 10-2 final in seven ends.

An 0-4 Team Hebert, who allowed 24 points in two contests, is eliminated from finals contention.

The two rinks to watch out for in the men’s event on the final day of round-robin play are Team Casper and Team Dropkin. Both sitting at 2-2, Casper has the easier Day 3 schedule as they play Team Hebert and Team Dropkin (thus, avoiding the 4-0 Team Shuster). Dropkin plays both Casper and Shuster. It’s possible that Casper and Dropkin wind up with the same round-robin record to force a tiebreaker, which would happen if they both win a game and lose a game.

Team Casper and Team Shuster will meet on the ice on Day 3 at 1:00 p.m. ET in a crucial showdown.

Men's event standings

Team Shuster 4-0
Team Casper 2-2
Team Dropkin 2-2
Team Hebert 0-4

Team Peterson claimed the first spot in the women’s final with two victories, pushing their round-robin record to a sparkling 4-0. During Session 3, they rallied late to stun Team Strouse, who led the contest for eight ends, about two-and-a-half hours of real time. Of course, the best rinks capitalize on mistakes, which is exactly what skip Tabitha Peterson did, scoring three points with a hammer throw to put Team Peterson up for good. The final was 8-5.

Peterson proceeded to make easy work of Team Johnson in Session 4 (9-5), eliminating the young rink from finals contention in the process.

Team Cousins improved their round-robin record to 3-1, defeating Team Johnson 10-7 in nine ends and Team Strouse 8-5 in eight ends. If Cousins manages to take one more game — a strong likelihood given they play the winless Team Johnson — they will join Team Peterson in the finals.

It will be an uphill climb for Team Strouse to force a tiebreak, but it is possible with some help. They need to win both of their games on Day 3 and for Team Cousins to lose both of theirs. Should that happen, Cousins and Strouse would face off to determine who meets Team Peterson.

Women's event standings

Team Peterson 4-0
Team Cousins 3-1
Team Strouse 1-3
Team Johnson 0-4
