During the team's third game of these Winter Olympics, a 5-0 win over Switzerland, U.S. women's hockey head coach John Wroblewski decided to wear an eye-catching USA Hockey varsity jacket from 1980.

First and foremost, Wroblewski styled the cream-colored jacket incredibly well. He layered the jacket with a button-up shirt and tie underneath, which allowed him to not only represent the U.S. in a stylish way, but also maintain the classy attire typically worn by hockey coaches behind the bench.

But the stylish nature of the fit was not the main story — the history behind the jacket was. Walter Bush, who passed away in 2016 at age 86, was the previous owner of the jacket, which was later sold in an estate sale. It eventually ended up on eBay, and Wroblewski acquired the piece of hockey history without even knowing its background.

The Hall of Famer was not only a hockey player-turned-coach, but someone who revolutionized USA Hockey as a whole. He served as general manager of the U.S. men’s team at the 1964 Olympic Games and as president of USA Hockey from 1986-2003. During his presidency, the U.S. won one of its only two gold medals in men’s hockey, and he was a key contributor in introducing women’s hockey into the Olympics.

Ron DeGregorio, who succeeded Bush as president of USA Hockey and later served as chairman of the board, had high praise for Bush’s impact on the women’s side of hockey.

“In my view, the women’s game is in the Olympics because of Walter Bush,” DeGregorio said. “He was on the IIHF Council at the time, a position I hold now, and was vice president and the driving force behind having women’s hockey in the Olympics in the 1990s. That moment in 1998 in Nagano, Japan, was a very big moment for him, and fortunately, we won. They can never take away being the first gold medal winner in women’s Olympic hockey, and it wouldn’t have happened without Walter.”

Twenty-eight years later, seeing the jacket of the man who helped introduce women’s hockey into the Games — even after he's passed away — is a poetic moment.

The U.S. is currently into the semifinals of the women's hockey tournament. Through five games, Team USA has a perfect 5-0 record, recently dispatching host Italy in Friday's quarterfinal game. The team has scored 26 goals — at least five in every game — and conceded just one throughout the tournament.

The semifinals take place on Monday, Feb. 16, and can be streamed live on NBCOlympics.com and Peacock.
