Germany will look to complete an unprecedented second consecutive medal sweep of the event. When the three German sleds swept the podium at Beijing 2022, it was the first time such a thing had happened in the discipline.
Another gold medal for Francesco Friedrich would also mean a three-peat in the event after he piloted the winning sleds in 2018 and 2022. Friedrich also won gold in the 4-man event at both Games.
This time around, Friedrich's path to a third gold could be hindered by his fellow countrymen Johannes Lochner and Adam Ammour, who pilot Germany's No. 1 and No. 3-seeded sleds, respectively. Lochner won silver behind Friedrich at Beijing 2022 but enters the 2026 Games the top-ranked pilot in both the 2-man and 4-man events.
Lochner went fastest in two of the five training runs he completed while Friedrich topped the timesheet on three of his six runs.
Del Duca to pilot U.S. in second Games
The United States will have just one sled in the 2-man event, and it will be piloted by Opening Ceremony flagbearer Frank Del Duca in his second Games. Del Duca's brakeman is Joshua Williamson, also in his second Olympics but his first competing in this discipline. The two will start 4th in the first of four runs.
Del Duca finished 13th in the 2-man event at Beijing 2022 but is coming off a career best World Cup season where he ranked 4th. The 34-year-old also finished 4th at the 2025 World Championships. Del Duca and Williamson posted a top-3 time in two of the six training runs at Cortina Sliding Centre.
Historically, Team USA has seen sparse success in the 2-man bobsled, with four of its five medals coming in the 1930s and 40s. It wasn't until Sochi 2014 that the late Steven Holcomb and his brakeman Steven Langton broke a decades-long drought to finish third. That medal was upgraded to silver in 2019 after the original gold medal-winning Russian team was stripped of its title due to doping.
