Here are the storylines to watch heading into the event...

A gaggle of frontrunners

The current world No. 1 is Belgian Kim Meylemans. Meylemans is sure to be a favorite for gold considering the world cup form she was in entering the Olympics, and she has experience as Milan Cortina will be her third Games. Meylemans finished 14th in her debut at PyeongChang 2018 and 18th at Beijing 2022. While she didn’t show much of her hand in the training runs, she won’t be counted out of the medal conversation.

World No. 2 Jaqueline Pfiefer (nĂ©e Lölling) won silver in her Olympic debut at PyeongChang 2018 but finished off the podium in 8th at Beijing 2022. However, Pfieffer seems to have found speed at Cortina Sliding Centre, where she topped three of the six training runs.

Hannah Neise of Germany (gold) and Kimberly Bos of the Netherlands (bronze) will defend their Beijing 2022 medals in the event. Bos is also the reigning world champion.

Another slider who has been rapid thus far at the House of Speed is Great Britain’s Tabitha Stoecker. Stoecker is the world No. 3 and finished every training run in the top 2, going fastest in two of them.

The 25-year-old Stoecker will be making her Olympic debut and could be vying for a British sweep of skeleton competition along with Matt Weston, who leads the men’s event halfway through.

Ro, Curtis to lead Team USA’s effort

Mystique Ro and Kelly Curtis are the United States' representatives in the event.

A track athlete in college, Ro will be making her Olympic debut at Milan Cortina 2026. The 31-year-old is ranked No. 17 in the world cup season and has seen success in the mixed team event, which will make its Olympic debut on Feb. 15. She and teammate Austin Florian won the mixed team world championship in the 2024-25 season. In second in that race was Stoecker and Weston.

Curtis, ranked No. 16 in the world, is competing in her second Games after finishing 21st at Beijing 2022. The 37-year-old from Princeton, New Jersey is also a Senior Airman in the United States Air Force and asked to be stationed in Italy in order to prepare for the Games.
