World No. 1 Jannik Sinner will compete in the men’s singles and doubles event at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games, the Italian Tennis Federation announced.
Sinner reached the top spot of the rankings after a deep run at the French Open before he was dismissed by eventual men’s champion Carlos Alcaraz. The 22-year-old lost in the semifinals to eventual Roland-Garros champion Alcaraz in five sets. Sinner’s success in Paris comes after he captured his first Grand Slam title in Australia earlier this year.
Sinner is joined on the Italian men’s team by compatriots Lorenzo Musetti, Matteo Arnaldi and Luciano Darderi. Sinner and Musetti will team up for the men’s doubles event.
Sinner and Musetti might face a determined team in doubles, as Alcaraz and Rafael Nadal announced earlier this week the two would pair for the men’s doubles event as well.
On the women's side, the Japan Tennis Association confirmed that four-time Grand Slam winner Naomi Osaka would compete at the Paris Games. This will be Osaka's second Games, after she competed in Tokyo in 2020. Osaka lit the cauldron at the Opening Ceremony that year.
Another Olympic qualifier joining Osaka in Paris is Denmark's Caroline Wozniacki. The 2018 Australian Open Grand Slam champion will return for her fourth Olympic Games. She previously competed at the 2008, 2012 and 2016 Games. Her best performance at the Games was in 2012 where she made it to the semifinals before being ousted by Serena Williams in two sets.
Other nation’s teams are expected to be announced by next week. Each National Organizing Committee has until June 19 to confirm whether their qualified athletes will compete in Paris.
The 2024 Olympic tennis tournament begins on July 27.
