Overview

Wrestling was part of the Ancient Olympic Games in Greece, making it one of the oldest competitive sports — if not the oldest — in the world. It's also been contested at every modern Olympics, with the exception of the 1900 Games.

There are two disciplines in Olympic wrestling: freestyle and Greco-Roman. Freestyle wrestling has categories for men and women, but Greco-Roman is exclusive to men. To level the playing field as much as possible, there are separate weight classes for each category.

While the rules of each discipline differ, the core objective is the same. Two wrestlers face off in a head-to-head bout, as they try to take down their opponent to score points. The wrestler with the most points at the end of the match is the winner, though either wrestler can end the match immediately by pinning their opponent.
