Jordan Stolz’s Speed Skating Career

What is Jordan Stolz’s career timeline in speed skating?

By age 9, Stolz’s speed skating prowess was clear — so much so that his parents decided to homeschool the young phenom to allow him more time to train. Five years later, he earned his first senior national title and set his first of 23 junior national records, but it was during the following season that his career really took off.

During his 2021-22 campaign, the then-17-year-old made his senior international debut, competing in his first World Cup, setting two junior world records apiece in the 500m and 1000m, and winning his first medal on the senior international level (silver in the 1000m). Then he exploded at the 2021 Olympic Trials, winning both the 500m and the 1000m in track-record times that eclipsed marks held by American great Shani Davis for 16 years. As a result, he was named to his first Olympic roster, becoming only the third U.S.-born skater to compete at his maiden Games at age 17.

His list of accolades only expanded from there. On the 2022-23 World Cup circuit, Stolz became the youngest man to win an individual World Cup race. Later that season, he skated to gold in four events at the 2023 World Junior Speed Skating Championships and three events at the 2023 World Single Distances Speed Skating Championships, the latter of which made him the youngest-ever world champion, the youngest gold medalist in event history, and the first man to win three individual titles at a single world championships.

The following season, Stolz repeated as world champion, snapped world records in the 1000m and big combination, and became the youngest man to win the World Allround Speed Skating Championships since American legend Eric Heiden in 1978. The 2024-25 season brought even more records of all kinds (track, national, and world), four gold medals at the 2025 Four Continents Speed Skating Championships, and a record-setting 18-straight World Cup wins.

What records has Jordan Stolz set in the 500m, 1000m, and 1500m?

Stolz has set sea-level records in different races seven times, including three at a World Cup event at his home oval in Milwaukee last season: the 500m (33.91 seconds), in which he became the first skater to break 34 seconds; the 1000m (1:06.16), which he won by a greater margin than that separating 2nd and 13th place; and the 1500m (1:41.46).

Stolz also owns the current overall mark in the 1000m, as well as the national senior and junior records in each of the three sprints.

What were Jordan Stolz’s results at the 2022 Beijing Olympics?

In his Olympic debut, the then-17-year-old Stolz placed 13th in the 500m and 14th in the 1000m.

How does Jordan Stolz compare to legendary skaters like Shani Davis and Eric Heiden?

Stolz often is compared to speed skating icons Heiden and Davis due to their shared versatility and once-in-a-generation talent that dominates nearly every distance in which they compete(d). Though the sport's landscape has changed in many ways since Heiden’s and Davis’ careers — the World Cup didn’t even exist until four years after Heiden retired — the three certainly are in a shared league of their own.

At just 19 years old, Stolz became only the third American man to win a world allround title and a world or Olympic sprint title in speed skating behind Davis and Heiden. Stolz’s victory in 2024 made him the youngest man to earn the prize since Heiden won his second of three consecutive titles in 1978 and the first to do so since Davis’ back-to-back victories in 2005 and 2006. Even more impressively, Stolz and Heiden are the only men since World War II to pair an Olympic or world 500m title with a world allround title in the distance.

Over his two-decade-long career, Davis collected 98 World Cup medals, and his 61 golds make him the second-winningest man in World Cup history. During his four World Cup seasons, Stolz has skated to almost half as many podiums (43) and about half as many top prizes (31).
