What is the difference between the normal hill and large hill?
In ski jumping, the main difference between the normal and large hills is their size. Typically, the K-point (or the point of the hill where it begins to flatten out) of the normal hill ranges from 85m to 99m (approximately 279 feet to 325 feet), while the K-point of the large hill ranges from 100m to 180m (approximately 328 feet to 591 feet).
Additionally, the number of points awarded for every meter a jumper travels beyond the K-point varies slightly between hills. Athletes receive more points for every meter traveled on the normal hill.
The normal hill at the Milan Cortina Olympics is an HS109 with a K-point of 98 meters (about 322 feet), and the large hill is an HS123 with a K-point of 128 meters (about 420 feet).
How is ski jumping scored at the Olympics?
Jumpers are scored primarily on distance and style, though points also are added or deducted based on the wind and gate factor.
Distance is measured along the curve of the landing hill from the take-off point to the exact place where the jumper’s feet touch the landing slope. Video cameras record the distance of each jump and then the distance is translated into distance points.
A panel of five judges award style points to jumpers on a scale of 0 to 20, and the highest and lowest scores are eliminated. A jump with perfect power, boldness, precision, fluidity and control from the take-off through the flight, the landing, and the out-run can earn a maximum of 60 style points.
Points are added when there are less favorable wind conditions; likewise, if there is a headwind, giving athletes more lift, points are subtracted. This addition to the scoring was first used at the Olympics in 2014.
Gate adjustments also affect scores. Points are reduced for a higher starting gate, while points are added for a lower start gate. Coaches or a technical jury can adjust an athlete’s starting gate before a run.
What are the key rules and regulations in Olympic ski jumping?
In each of the ski jumping events, athletes make one scored jump in each round. The number of rounds depends on the event.
In the individual events, each athlete jumps once in the qualification round and once in the final. The top-30 athletes from the qualification round advance to the final.
The men’s super team, which made its international debut on the 2022-23 World Cup circuit and replaces the traditional Olympic men's team event, consists of three scored rounds in which two athletes from the same country compete together. Each team member jumps in each round. The top-12 teams from the first round advance to the second round, and the top eight make the final.
Groups of two men and two women from the same country participate in the mixed team event, which has two scored rounds. After the first, the top-eight teams advance to the final. Only nations which have qualified two jumpers of each gender to the individual events may enter the mixed team event.
There also are specific equipment regulations based on the athlete’s height, weight and body shape. Jumping suits must conform exactly to the jumper’s body, and ski length must not exceed 145% of the athlete’s height (though different restrictions apply for athletes with BMIs below 21).
Where will the Milan Cortina 2026 ski jumping competitions be held?
Ski jumping at the 2026 Milan Cortina Winter Olympics will be held at the newly-renovated Predazzo Olympic Ski Jumping Hill at the Giuseppe Dal Ben Ski Jumping Stadium in Predazzo, Italy.
The venue also will host the ski jumping segment of the Nordic combined competition.
How does ski jumping differ from Nordic combined?
In ski jumping, athletes only participate in the jumping competition. Nordic combined athletes, however, compete in two disciplines: ski jumping and cross country skiing. Results earned in both competitions are combined to determine the winners.
