The U.S. and Canada women's hockey teams took the ice for the fourth and final Rivalry Series game at Rogers Place in Edmonton, Alberta.
The Americans already clinched the Rivalry Series after they beat Canada 10-4 in Game 3, and in their first three wins, they outscored the Canadians, 20-6.
For the final game of the series, the U.S. women's hockey team made history when the squad completed the first-ever sweep in the tournament, which began in 2019. Team USA defeated Canada 4-1 to seal the final victory.
Tensions were high as soon as the puck dropped between the rival countries in their last meeting before the Winter Olympics. The pressure wasn't only due to the best-on-best competition, but it also was because it was the last opportunity for players to showcase their skills on this stage before national team selections for Milan Cortina.
The first period was punctuated by chippy, physical and evenly-matched play on both sides and ended scoreless.
Caroline Harvey scored the first goal of the game for the U.S. with 14:47 left in the second.
Canada answered exactly one minute later to tie the score 1-1. Brianne Jenner delivered the answer when she notched her 50th career goal for Canada off of a backhand dish from Jennifer Gardiner.
Laila Edwards responded right back from the outside to make the score 2-1. Taylor Heise delivered the puck to the defenseman who buried it top shelf to claim the lead going into the third.
Incredible puck movement and absolute chaos on the ice kicked off the final period, when shots ricocheted off posts and penalty minutes accumulated.
However, as she's historically done, U.S. team captain Hilary Knight provided the calm. She netted a goal with 8:31 to go in the game to give the Americans a comfy cushion with a 3-1 lead.
Knight put an exclamation point on the night when she scored the final goal of the game. The 36-year-old pocketed an empty net goal with just 1:37 left in regulation.
Aerin Frankel was rock solid in goal for the U.S. with 23 saves on the night.
The official 23-player Olympic rosters are expected to be named by early January. Women's Olympic hockey begins in Milan Cortina on Feb. 5.
