What to know about short track at the 2026 Winter Olympics

Over the course of three years, William Dandjinou flew from being Canada’s sixth-best short track skater â€” missing the five-man 2022 Olympic team just by one spot — to the world’s best. On this year’s World Tour circuit, the 24-year-old won seven of his 12 individual races to clinch a second-straight Crystal Globe title, awarded to the world’s best man and woman short track skater at the end of each season. Olympic veteran Steven DuBois, who claimed a medal of every color in his Olympic debut in Beijing, finished the season not too far behind Dandjinou in 3rd. The two will steer a Canadian men’s relay team looking for its fifth Olympic gold in eight appearances

Teammate Courtney Sarault commanded this year’s women’s competition, battling her way through a talented field for her first Crystal Globe. She may find her fiercest challengers in the Netherlands’ Xandra Velzeboer, the reigning 500m world champion who won the first three World Tour races this season, and the United States’ Corinne Stoddard, who finished 2nd overall after a career-best season marked by 11 total medals (8 individual, 3 relay). Stoddard and fellow American Kristen Santos-Griswold could revive a U.S. Olympic squad which in Beijing found itself without a medal for the first time since 1998.

Kim Gil-Li and Choi Min-Jeong, both of whom hail from longtime short track juggernaut South Korea, own the women’s 1500m. Kim won this year’s season title in the distance, and Choi stands as the reigning world champion and two-time reigning Olympic champion. Dutch skater Suzanne Schulting, who became only the second short track skater (and the first woman) to win four short track medals at a single Games, also will compete after taking the season off to focus on developing her skills in long track speed skating. The 28-year-old will compete in both disciplines in Milan Cortina.

Hosting its first Olympics in 20 years, Italy also will be a country to watch in short track. Pietro Sighel and Thomas Nadalini powered a men’s squad that took bronze in each of the four men’s relay races on this year’s World Tour. Sighel finished the season 2nd overall behind Dandjinou, while Nadalini landed in 6th. Arianna Fontana, who in 2022 became Italy’s most highly-decorated Winter Olympian and the most successful short track skater in Olympic history, will compete on the Olympic stage for the sixth time.
