After two exciting days of biathlon relay competition in Ruhpolding, Germany, individual events got underway as Stage 5 of the IBU World Cup continued.
103 biathletes competed in the staggered start women's 7.5km sprint, and it was a speedy day on the course and shooting range.
In addition to firing fast, the top-seven finishers in the race shot perfectly from the range in the final women's sprint before the 2026 Milan Cortina Olympics.
While Italian biathlete Lisa Vittozzi sprinted and shot with intensity and precision and looked as though she may run away with the race, it was Sweden's Hanna Oeberg who ultimately took home the victory. She won the sprint in 19 minutes, 10.7 seconds.
The 7.5km sprint win in Ruhpolding was Oeberg's second sprint victory this season. The Swedish biathlete also won back in December at the Annecy-Le Grand Bornand, France World Cup.
After the race, Oeberg reflected on the fifth sprint victory of her career and the German venue which she considers a second home. "It feels very good for sure, I think the key today was maybe to be a little bit more relaxed, also to go out and enjoy it," Oeberg said.
Lou Jeanmonnot sprinted across the line 7.5 seconds behind Oeberg to earn silver. The French biathlete remains the overall World Cup leader.
Italian biathlete and sharpshooter Vittozzi claimed the final spot on the podium after she crossed the line 4.2 seconds behind Jeanmonnot.
For Team USA, Margie Freed finished 40th overall and will compete in the pursuit race.
Saturday's men's individual biathlon competition heats up with the 10km sprint event in Ruhpolding.
