Caution and conservation of energy were the themes of the day at Stelvio Ski Centre Friday for the third and final training run ahead of Saturday’s Alpine skiing men’s downhill.
With most racers having already completed at least one training session (a requirement for entry into Saturday’s race) prior to Friday, exactly half of the 44-man field opted to stay warm and cozy at the Olympic village, bypassing the session altogether. American medal hopeful Ryan Cochran-Seigle was among this group.
Swiss teammates and podium favorites Marco Odermatt and Franjo von Allmen, meanwhile, did take the opportunity for one last rep on the Stelvio piste, taking race speed through the opening portion of the course before easing off the gas pedal and cruising through the finish.
Canadian James Crawford, one of the few racers to stay in his aerodynamic tuck for the duration of his run, clocked the top time at 1:54.95. He was followed by Daniel Hemetsberger of Austria, who rebounded impressively following a scary crash in Thursday’s second training session.
American River Radamus set the third-best mark. Radamus, a giant slalom dark horse, is not a downhill regular on the World Cup tour.
The Olympic downhill contest is set for Saturday, Feb. 7, at 5:30 a.m. ET, also streaming live on Peacock and NBCOlympics.com.
