The fastest women on skis got their last looks at the Tofane Alpine Skiing Centre in Cortina Satuday, with a pair of Americans making statements ahead of Sunday’s women’s downhill.
For the second consecutive day, Lindsey Vonn (USA) successfully navigated the piste on a torn left ACL. This time, though, she posted a top-3 time of 1:38.12, shaving over two seconds off her Friday mark.
The 41-year-old's coach, Aksel Lund Svindal spoke to reporters after the training session on her behalf.
"I hope you will talk to someone else tomorrow and I think you will," he said with a grin. "It was important to get on the snow today because it's a very different run. She knows she will have to push harder tomorrow because the rest of the girls will and it's an Olympic downhill."
Vonn trailed only Kira Weidle-Winkelmann (GER) and U.S. teammate Breezy Johnson, who paced the entire field with a time of 1:37.91.
Johnson became the second Team USA athlete to top a women’s downhill training session in Cortina, after Jacqueline Wiles did so Friday. Wiles wasn’t among the leaders Saturday; the 33-year-old from Oregon narrowly avoided a potentially dangerous crash early in her run, but stayed upright despite a 360-degree off-balance spin and finished the run.
Weather has been a significant factor across the three scheduled training days, with snow and fog blanketing the Tofane course all week. After Thursday’s first session had to be cancelled entirely, both the second and third sessions included long delays. On Saturday, the race jury decided to move the start gate lower, mid training, to avoid the heavy fog.
The dress rehearsals are officially over. The women will go for gold in the real-deal downhill medal event Sunday at 5:30 a.m. ET. The action streams live on Peacock and NBCOlympics.com.
