Greta Myers, a 21-year-old American speed skater set to make her Olympic debut at the 2026 Milan Cortina Olympics, was added to the 3000m competition three hours before the race began Saturday.
Earlier that morning, Czechia's Martina Sablikova, who won the event at the 2010 Vancouver Games and set the world record in 2019, announced her withdrawal from the race on social media.
The United States did not initially qualify any skaters for either of the two women's long distances (3000m, 5000m). However, Myers secured the first alternate quota spot with her results on the World Cup circuit and a win in the event at the U.S. Olympic Trials in early January. She will race in the first pair when the event begins in Milan.
Myers, originally from Lino Lakes, Minnesota, qualified for the 1500m and the mass start at Trials and was added to the women's team pursuit relay shortly after.
The women's 3000m opens the Olympic speed skating competition at 10 a.m. ET on Saturday, Feb. 7.
