When and where are the next Winter Olympics?
It’s been a thrilling Winter Olympics so far, with great stories, surprising results and iconic moments. But it’s never too late to look ahead.
The next Winter Olympics will remain in Europe and take place in the French Alps region from Feb. 1 to Feb. 17 in 2030, with the Paralympics coming shortly afterward from March 1 to March 10, 2030.
France has previously hosted the Games six times and the Winter Olympics three times. The most recent Summer Games were also held in France — Paris 2024.
The 2030 Olympics will mark the second consecutive Winter Olympics that the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has shifted from a single host city to a more regional model.
The plan for the French Alps is to utilize a similar approach to Milan Cortina, spreading out competition venues across the southwest region of France. The Games will use mostly preexisting venues, including sites from the 1992 Albertville Winter Olympics.
There will be four zones at the 2030 French Alps Olympic Games:
Nice Zone
The Nice zone will host the indoor ice events such as hockey, figure skating, short track, speed skating and curling. For ice hockey, Allianz Riviera, which hosted Olympic soccer events during Paris 2024, will be transformed into two ice rinks for the Games.
Savoie Zone
The Savoie zone, considered the heart of the Alps, will host Alpine skiing, ski jumping, bobsled, luge and skeleton.
Haute-Savoie Zone
The Haute-Savoie zone, in the northern Alps, will host cross-country skiing and biathlon.
Briancon Zone
The Briancon zone, in the southern Alps, will host freestyle skiing and snowboarding.
So despite the French Alps being the face of these Games, the Olympics will be spread out across multiple regions.
The venue for the Opening Ceremony has not been announced, but the Closing Ceremony is planned for the Promenade des Anglais in Nice, a waterfront setting with no stadium involved, similar to Paris' Opening Ceremony in 2024.
Looking farther ahead, the 2034 Winter Olympics will return to Salt Lake City, Utah — 32 years after the city hosted the 2002 Games.
