Overview
In Olympic field hockey, 24 teams (12 men's, 12 women's) compete in a round robin-style tournament. The best teams in each group advance to the playoffs.
Though modern field hockey dates back to the mid-19th century England, field hockey did not make its Olympic debut until the 1908 London Games, and the women's tournament wasn't added to the Olympic program until 1980.
Historically, India has dominated the sport, winning eight total Olympic titles in the men's competition and six straight between 1928 and 1956, enjoying a stretch of 30 wins. Other countries — including Argentina, the Netherlands, Germany, Belgium, Spain and France — have since climbed to the top of the international field, growing the sport on a global scale.
At the 2024 Paris Olympics, the Dutch swept both tournaments. The women earned their second-straight Olympic crown, while the men won their first in 24 years.
