Overview

Artistic gymnastics is one of the centerpiece sports of the Olympic Games, featuring athletes competing across multiple apparatus — four for women (vault, uneven bars, balance beam and floor exercise) and six for men (floor exercise, pommel horse, still rings, vault, parallel bars and horizontal bar).

Competition is structured in four phases: qualification, team finals, all-around finals and individual apparatus finals, with athletes advancing through each stage based on scores. In modern scoring, each routine receives a combined score made up of a difficulty (D) score and execution (E) score, allowing for increasingly complex skills while still rewarding precision and form.

Gymnastics has been part of the Olympic program since the first modern Games at the 1896 Summer Olympics, initially featuring only men’s events. Women’s gymnastics was added at the 1928 Summer Olympics, and the sport has evolved significantly since, particularly with the introduction of the open-ended scoring system in 2006, which replaced the traditional “perfect 10” and removed the ceiling on difficulty.

The Olympic gymnastics program will add a new event, mixed team, in 2028.

When it was contested for the first time at the 2025 European Championships, each nation's team consisted of a male gymnast and a female gymnast. Men competed on floor, parallel bars and high bar while women competed on vault, beam and floor. While the Olympic event hasn't been set in stone, the competition could be expected to follow a similar format.
