The sport, then known as synchronized swimming, made its Olympic debut at the 1984 Summer Olympics. In 2017, the international federation rebranded the discipline as artistic swimming to better reflect its emphasis on choreography and performance. Today, the sport continues to push technical boundaries with increasingly complex lifts, hybrid movements and underwater sequences, while maintaining its foundation in precision and artistry.
