Softball made its Olympic debut at the 1996 Atlanta Games, the last Summer Olympics hosted by the United States, and remained on the program through 2008. The sport was reintroduced to the Olympic program during the Tokyo Games, which occurred in 2021, though it was dropped again in 2024.
The United States leads the all-time medal count in the sport, collecting three gold medals and two silver. Japan (2 gold, 1 silver, 1 bronze) and Australia (1 silver, 3 bronze) are tied for 2nd with four total prizes.

Where will the softball competition be held at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics?
Olympic softball will be contested at the OKC Softball Park in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, the softball capital of the United States.
Also known as Devon Park, the complex encompasses four softball fields, the National Softball Hall of Fame and Museum, and USA Softball headquarters. During the Olympics, athletes will play on the main field, which can seat 13,000 fans and annually hosts the NCAA Women's College World Series.
