The 3x3 version of basketball is based on street basketball, one of the most popular urban sports globally.

Unlike conventional basketball, 3x3 is played on a half-court where two teams of three players compete. Both teams attack and defend the same hoop, depending on who has possession of the ball. Games can be won in two ways: be the first team to score 21 points, or have the highest score through 10 minutes. The 3-point line in conventional basketball serves as the 2-point line in 3x3 basketball. Each team has a roster of four players.

This will be the third Olympic appearance of 3x3 basketball, which debuted in 2021 at the Tokyo Games.

There will be a men's tournament and a women's tournament for 3x3 basketball at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

These events are in addition to the traditional 5-on-5 basketball tournaments held for men and women.

3x3 basketball at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics will begin on July 16, 2028, and conclude on July 22.

A temporary outdoor venue will be constructed in the Sepulveda Basin Recreation Area to host 3x3 basketball. The Sepulveda Basin Recreation Area will also have venues for skateboarding, BMX freestyle, BMX racing, and modern pentathlon.
