Overview
Boxing has been a fixture at the Olympics since 1904 (missing just one year of competition). The 1-on-1 combat sport features athletes attempting to land punches on their opponents, specifically in the head and torso areas.
Bouts feature three 3-minute rounds. Judges, on a 10-point scale, score rounds based on punches connected, technical proficiency and tactical superiority. Winners are declared via point totals, knockout (KO) or technical knockout (TKO).
Competitors fight in different weight classes, and women are required to wear helmets, while men are not.
The United States leads the Olympic gold and overall medal counts in boxing with 50 and 118, respectively. Cuba and Great Britain have the next highest totals.
