Overview

An aquatic sport that combines artistry, athleticism and precision, diving was first introduced as an Olympic sport at the 1904 St. Louis Games and has remained one to this day.

Depending on the discipline, athletes jump from either 3-meter springboards or 10-meter platforms, turning and twisting in the air to land gracefully in a pool.

The goal for Olympians is to enter the pool water without creating a big splash, and judges award a number of points, between 0-10, based on technique, form, entry and when applicable, synchronization (for the non-individual events).

The United States leads the all-time Olympic diving medal table with 13 golds and 32 medals overall, although China has dominated the sport since 1992.
