Overview
One of the nine Olympic sports that was contested at the very first modern Summer Games in 1896, tennis boasts both a rich Olympic history and serious star power.
Champions like Carlos Alcaraz, Jannik Sinner, Coco Gauff and more are expected to compete on the Carson hard courts near L.A. in 2028.
The iconic racket sport features individual athletes or pairs stationed on either side of a net, hitting tennis balls back and forth with the objective to execute a shot that cannot be returned to earn points.
Matches are best two-out-of-three sets, with players needing to win six games to take a set, and tournaments are single elimination — meaning that if you win, you advance and if you lose, you're eliminated.
Serena Williams, Venus Williams and Andre Agassi are famous Americans that have earned gold medals in Olympic tennis. The U.S. leads the total gold medal tally with 21, but Great Britain leads the overall medal count with 43.
