Gymnastics

The 2028 U.S. Olympic Team Trials for Gymnastics will take place at the KFC Yum! Center in Louisville, KY from Friday, June 16 to Monday, June 19, 2028. The Team USA roster for artistic, trampoline, and rhythmic gymnastics will be announced live at the conclusion of competition.
The men’s competition will take place on Friday June 16 and Saturday June 17, 2028, while the women’s will be on Sunday June 18 and Monday June 19, 2028.
Louisville has been home of the Kentucky Derby since 1875, but will be re-named Gymnastics City USA when it hosts the Trials.
Suni Lee, Jade Carey and Hezly Rivera, who won gold together in the team event at the Paris Olympics, may be some of the headliners at Trials.
Swimming
DATE: June 2028
LOCATION: Indianapolis, Indiana
The U.S. Olympic Swimming Trials are set to take place at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, Indiana for the second-straight Trials. The Olympic-qualifying event is expected to take place in June and follow a similar nine-day format as in 2024. The exact dates have not yet been announced.
Lucas Oil Stadium serves as the home field for the NFL’s Indianapolis Colts. Most recently in 2026, the stadium hosted the 2026 NCAA Men’s Final Four and 2026 NFL Scouting Combine.
For the first time in Olympic history, men’s and women’s 50m backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly races will be on the program.
LA 2028 is allowing 830 total swimmers worldwide, fewer than previous Games, despite adding six new events. This makes qualification slightly more difficult.
USA Swimming’s 2028 selection procedures have not yet been released; historically the top two finishers in individual events who satisfy Olympic eligibility requirements are selected to Team USA.
World Aquatics permits a maximum of 26 men and 26 women for each NOC.
Track & Field
DATE: June 17-22, 2028
LOCATION: TBD
The U.S. Olympic Track & Field Trials are often considered one of the hardest national championship events in sports - only the top three men and top three women in each event will earn their spot as a member of Team USA.
The meet is expected to take place from Saturday, June 17 to Thursday, June 22, 2028 (subject to change).
USATF has not officially announced a host city. In 2021 and 2024, the U.S. Olympic Track & Field Trials were held at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon, which has become the sport’s premier U.S. venue.
The biggest change to the U.S. Track & Field Trials is a new, compressed six-consecutive day format, which will have reduced rounds compared to previous years. The Trials will not include the men’s and women’s 10,000m, the women’s heptathlon and the men’s decathlon, and will be contested at different sites on different dates.
Marathon
DATE: March 25, 2028
LOCATION: St. Louis, Missouri
St. Louis will host the U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials for both men and women on March 25, 2028.
NBC will broadcast the 26.2-mile race, which will begin at Washington University’s Francis Olympic Field and include several loops downtown before it finishes at Energizer Park.
Francis Olympic Field was used as the main venue for the 1904 Summer Olympics and is one of the oldest sports venues west of the Mississippi River that is still in use. Energizer Park is home of St. Louis SC, the city’s MLS franchise, will host eight soccer matches during the 2028 Olympics.
St. Louis hosted the Trials for women’s marathon in 2004 as well as the U.S. Olympic Figure Skating Trials for the 2026 Winter Games.
USA Track & Field lowered the time standard needed to qualify for the men’s marathon by two minutes, from 2:18:00 to 2:16:00. The women’s standard of 2:37:00 remains the same. Currently, 134 men and 139 women have qualified for the 2028 trials.
The men and women who make the U.S. team in St. Louis in 2028 will take on the Olympic marathon in Los Angeles, which will begin at Venice Beach.
Wrestling
DATES AND LOCATION: TBD
The U.S. Olympic Wrestling Trials are scheduled to take place in early 2028. Exact dates and locations have not yet been announced by USA Wrestling.
The U.S. Olympic Wrestling Trials for the Paris Olympics were held in April 2024 at Penn State University.
As in many sports, the Olympic qualification system and the U.S. team selection process for wrestling are two separate tracks:
- The U.S. must first qualify a quota spot for the Olympics
- American wrestlers must then compete for the right to represent Team USA
Under the United World Wrestling’s (UWW) qualification system, Olympic quotas belong to a National Olympic Committee (NOC), not the individual wrestler who earned them.
As a result, an athlete can help qualify the United States for the Olympics and then still have to win at the Trials to secure a spot on the roster.
The first step of the process is to ensure that the U.S. qualifies quota spots for LA 2028. The U.S. has four opportunities from 2027-2028 to qualify for the Olympics: the World Championships, Continental Qualifiers, the World Olympic Qualifier, and the UWW Rankings. This ultimately leads to 16 countries earning a spot in the 2028 Olympics.
After the U.S. has secured a quota spot within a weight class, American wrestlers must compete through the USA Wrestling’s Olympic Team selection process. With 18 weight classes on the LA 2028 program, the U.S. Olympic Team Trials are expected to determine one wrestler in each weight class.
Diving
DATES AND LOCATION: TBD
Similar to wrestling, U.S. divers must first earn Olympic quota places, then compete at the U.S. Olympic Diving Trials to secure a spot on Team USA.
USA Diving has not yet announced the dates or location for the 2028 Trials. The Trials for the Paris Olympics took place in Knoxville, Tennessee in June 2024.
There will be 8 Olympic diving events at LA28 and the final U.S. diving team is typically around 4 men and 4 women. The U.S. is guaranteed synchronized quota places as the host nation, and athletes can compete in both an individual and synchronized event, so some divers will double up into events.
The World Aquatics and IOC added more chances for divers to earn quotas for their NOC through the 2028 World Cup circuit. Qualification opportunities include the World Aquatics Championships, Continental Championships and 2028 Diving World Cup Stops 1 and 2.
Diving fans can look forward to the World Aquatics Championships in Budapest June 26 - July 18, 2027, which will be the first major Olympic diving qualifying event.
