What to know about figure skating at the 2026 Winter Olympics
The United States enters the 2026 Winter Olympics in figure skating with its deepest and most balanced roster in more than a decade, headlined by Ilia Malinin, the clear gold-medal favorite in men’s singles. Unbeaten since late 2023 and the only skater to ever land a quadruple Axel in competition, Malinin has redefined the technical ceiling of the sport and arrives in Milan Cortina as one of Team USA’s most bankable medal hopes. While there are extremely skilled challengers vying for the title such as Japan's Yuma Kagiyama, if Malinin skates nearly as well as he has for the past two seasons, the Olympic gold medal will be his for the taking.
Behind him, teammates Andrew Torgashev and Maxim Naumov are each capable of top tier skates but have yet to break through. They will be looking to establish their competitive presence and achieve personal bests in Milan. Eyes will especially be on Naumov, who qualified for the U.S. Olympic team after the loss of his parents in the American Airlines Flight 5342 tragedy over Washington, D.C. in which 28 members of the figure skating community died. Competing on skating’s biggest stage, Naumov has spoken about honoring their memory, turning a career milestone into a testament to resilience and perseverance.
On the women's side, three-time and reigning U.S. champion Amber Glenn, world champion Alysa Liu and 2024 world silver medalist Isabeau Levito, make up the star-studded U.S. Olympic team. With a deep roster of Japanese women led by Kaori Sakamoto, and the neutral athlete Adeliia Petrosyan of Russia in the mix, the women's event is shaping up to be one of the most exciting of the 2026 Olympics.
In the years following the 2022 Beijing Olympics, ice dance has been dominated by Americans Madison Chock and Evan Bates. The three-time world champions are competing their fifteenth year together, and Milan Cortina will be their fourth Olympic Games. They will be challenged by newly formed French duo, Laurence Fournier Beaudry and Guillaume Cizeron, who have had a few unfortunate mishaps in their first season together, but who largely appear capable of topping the score table. Also on Team USA will be young teams, Emilea Zingas and Vadym Kolesnik, and Christina Carreira and Anthony Ponomarenko marking an exciting future of American ice dancing.
The U.S. Olympic team has two pair teams heading to Milan Cortina, Elle Kam and Danny O'Shea and Emily Chen and Spencer Akira Howe. While unlikely to break the podium at these Olympics both teams have proven capable of facing off against the world's best.
