What to know about hockey at the 2026 Winter Olympics
Hockey at the 2026 Milan Cortina Winter Olympics is one of the few sports that will begin a day before the Opening Ceremony and ends the same day as the Closing Ceremony. So expect exciting hockey from start to finish in one of the most anticipated Olympic tournaments in years.
The big headline for men's hockey at the 2026 Games: NHL players are back! That's right, NHL players are returning to Olympic ice for the first time since the 2014 Sochi Olympics. That means the Olympic tournament will feature the best hockey players in the world, and when the puck drops, the matchups are expected to be fiercer than ever.
Many NHL stars will make their Olympic debut for the first time, including twenty-three members of Team USA. The U.S. squad is made up of two sets of star siblings: Jack and Quinn Hughes, and Brady and Matthew Tkachuk. The brothers are joined by Matt Boldy, Kyle Connor, Jack Eichel, Brock Faber, Jake Guentzel, Noah Hanifin, Connor Hellebuyck, Clayton Keller, Jackson LaCombe, Dylan Larkin, Auston Matthews, Charlie McAvoy, J.T. Miller, Brock Nelson, Jake Oettinger, Jake Sanderson, Jaccob Slavin, Jeremy Swayman, Tage Thompson, Vincent Trocheck and Zach Werenski.
Team USA is expected to compete with Canada for gold as they go head-to-head with legendary Canadian players like Sidney Crosby, Nathan MacKinnon, Brad Marchand and Connor McDavid. The U.S. men's hockey team has made it clear that it's "gold or bust" at the Milan Cortina Games and they won't accept anything less.
On the women's side, all of the chatter also is about the U.S. and Canada and for good reason. Since women's hockey debuted at the Olympics in 1998, every gold has been won by the two North American countries. While Team USA swept the Canadians in the most recent Rivalry Series tournament, Canada has won five total gold medals at the Olympics, including at the most recent Beijing Games.
But if U.S. captain Hilary Knight has anything to say about it, she'll be going out on top after her fifth and final Olympic Games. In Milan, Knight will become the first U.S. hockey player to participate in five Olympics, and if she earns her fifth medal of any color, she’ll tie the record for the most hockey medals in history.
Twenty-one-year-old Laila Edwards also will make history at the Games as the first Black woman ever to compete for the U.S. women's hockey team at the Olympics.
Cayla Barnes, Hannah Bilka, Alex Carpenter, Britta Curl-Salemme, Kendall Coyne Schofield, Joy Dunne, Aerin Frankel, Rory Guilday, Caroline Harvey, Taylor Heise, Tessa Janecke, Megan Keller, Ava McNaughton, Abbey Murphy, Kelly Pannek, Gwyneth Philips, Hayley Scamurra, Kirsten Simms, Lee Stecklein, Haley Winn and Grace Zumwinkle round out the remainder of the star-studded roster.
Canada is led by five-time Olympian Marie-Philip Poulin. This Canadian captain is in search of a second-straight gold medal at the Games and a fourth gold for Poulin would tie the record for most gold medals in Olympic hockey.
Four-time Olympian Coyne Schofield has said that “a gold medal and gold medal only” is the expectation for Team USA.
