It's been eight years since Lindsey Vonn (USA) last stepped foot on Olympic snow. One five-year retirement and a robot-assisted knee surgery later, she's back.
In November 2024, Vonn announced that she would be returning to professional Alpine skiing with the goal of competing at the 2026 Milan Cortina Winter Olympics. She cited her love for Cortina, where she's won 12 times on the World Cup circuit, as one of her motivating factors.
The 41-year-old has dominated this Cup season, winning twice and reaching the podium in seven out of eight total races. However, a week before the Olympic Opening Ceremony, she crashed in Crans Montana, Switzerland, and later revealed that she "completely ruptured" her ACL. Despite the injury, Vonn will race in the women's downhill on Sunday, February 8.

What records has Lindsey Vonn set in Alpine skiing?
Vonn has set a number of records in Alpine skiing over the course of her career. Her Olympic gold performance in the women’s downhill in 2010 was the first (and only) time a U.S. skier won that event. When she retired from competition in 2019, her 82 World Cup victories were the most of any woman in history, although she has since been passed by fellow American Mikaela Shiffrin.
Vonn is also the oldest Alpine skier ever, man or woman, to win a World Cup event.
Which events will Lindsey Vonn compete in at Winter Olympics?
Before sustaining a torn ACL in her crash in Crans Montana, Switzerland, Vonn was expected to compete in the women's downhill, women's super-G and women's team combined at the 2026 Winter Olympics. Now, her schedule may look different.
"My goal is, obviously, right now the downhill," she told reporters on February 3. "I have to see how my knee feels. If it's stable and I feel confident, I'll continue to race. That is my goal, obviously."
When asked if she plans to start in the super-G and team combined, Vonn stated:
"I don't know yet. I have to take it day by day... I can't tell you that answer until I actually ski 85 miles an hour. Then I can say."
