With the 2024 Paris Games approaching, Olympic qualifying is in full swing. The qualification timeline and process is different for every sport, but some athletes have already earned their spots on the U.S. Olympic team. Many more will be named to the team in the months ahead as Olympic Trials and the end of qualification periods approach.

Below is a list of athletes that have already qualified to represent the U.S. in Paris, along with some background information on how other athletes can still qualify in the months ahead.

To determine which athletes make the Olympic roster, USA Archery holds Olympic Trials, which involve multiple stages and are still ongoing.

Artistic Swimming

The U.S. has qualified an artistic swimming team for the first time since 2008. Due to a recent rule change, men are now eligible for spots on the team for the first time ever, but no athletes have officially been named to the Olympic roster yet. The U.S. also qualified for the women's duet event.

The qualification period for badminton concludes on April 28. At that point, athletes will begin officially qualifying for the Paris Olympics based on the final ranking list.

Boxing

Several U.S. boxers have already qualified through either the 2023 Pan American Games or the first Olympic qualifying tournament. Canoeing

Qualification is currently ongoing for canoeing. Cycling

The qualification period for road cycling has ended, and the U.S. can bring a team of three men and two women to Paris. Chloe Dygert has provisionally earned a spot thanks to her 2023 world title in the women's time trial. The U.S. has also earned several quota spots in track cycling, but no athletes have been named to the Olympic team yet. Meanwhile, qualification for mountain biking, BMX racing and BMX freestyle is still ongoing, and the U.S. has already started securing quota spots in some of those disciplines.

Diving

The U.S. will have at least one diver in every Olympic event with the exception of men's synchronized platform. In total, the U.S. has currently qualified six out of a possible eight quota spots in the individual events, in addition to qualifying a team for three of the four synchronized events. The athletes filling those quota spots will be determined at U.S. Olympic Diving Trials taking place June 16-23 in Knoxville, Tennessee.

Equestrian

The U.S. successfully qualified for all three team events (dressage, jumping, eventing), and as a result, will also have three entries in each of the individual competitions. The Olympic roster will be named later this year.

The qualification period for golf ends on June 17 for men and June 24 for women. Players will automatically qualify based on the International Golf Federation's world ranking list at that time. The U.S. could send the maximum of four men and four women to Paris, provided that all those players are ranked in the top 15 at the end of the qualification period. Current world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler was the first American to mathematically secure a spot in Paris.

Gymnastics

The U.S. has qualified full teams for both the men and women thanks its performances at the last two world championships. That means that five men and five women will ultimately be named to the Olympic team. As part of the selection process, Olympic Trials will be held June 27-30 in Minneapolis. Only the top-ranked athlete in the all-round competitions for both men and women will earn an automatic spot on the Olympic team, however; the rest of the team will be decided by discretionary selection.

Handball

The U.S. did not qualify a men's or women's handball team for Paris 2024. The last time Team USA competed in an Olympic handball tournament was during the 1996 Atlanta Games.

Judo

The two-year qualification period for judo will end on June 23. At that point, quota spots will be allocated based on the world ranking list.

Rowing

The U.S. has currently qualified eight boats for Paris but can add to that total at the final Olympic qualifier taking place in May. In the case of the women's four and women's eight, a group of 13 rowers were named to the Olympic team, but it has not yet been decided who will be in which boat.

The U.S. women, meanwhile, qualified for the Paris Games after winning the CONCACAF W Championship in July 2022. Rosters will be announced later this year, but there have been hints about several players who are likely to play for the men's team.

Sport Climbing

Every individual event contested at the Olympic Games will also take place at Trials. Olympic spots will go to the athletes that finish first and second in each event. Swimmers can also qualify as relay team members by finishing third through sixth in the 100m and 200m freestyle events. For open water swimming, three athletes have directly qualified for the Olympics based on their results at the 2023 or 2024 World Championships.

Table Tennis

That allows the U.S. to bring a full team of three women to Paris, although only two will be allowed to compete in the singles tournament. Lily Zhang was able to automatically qualify for the U.S. team, while the other two spots were decided at Olympic Trials. No men have earned spots in at the Paris Games, although an opportunity remains for singles players to qualify through a Pan American tournament in May.

Taekwondo

The U.S. Olympic taekwondo team will consist of four athletes. One athlete, CJ Nickolas, was able to qualify via the world rankings at the end of the qualification period in December 2023; the other three qualified via a Pan American tournament in April.

Track & Field

The majority of the Olympic team will be decided at the U.S. Olympic Track and Field Trials taking place June 21-30 in Eugene, Oregon. The top three finishers in each event at Trials make the Olympic roster, provided they have met the Olympic qualifying standard. Additional athletes, based on results from Trials, can also be added to the relay pools. A separate trial was held in February 2024 to determine which marathoners will represent the U.S. in Paris.

Volleyball

After winning its Olympic qualification tournaments last year, the U.S. will have men's and women's volleyball teams at the Paris Games. Rosters will be announced at a later date.

Water Polo

The U.S. has qualified men's and women's teams for Paris after winning gold in both divisions at the 2023 Pan American Games. Rosters have not yet been announced.

Weightlifting

With the qualifying period for weightlifting concluded, nominations are currently being sorted out. Although there are five different weight classes per gender, each country can only have three lifters per gender on their Olympic team. (There is also a limit of one athlete per weight class from each nation.) This makes the qualification process less straightforward, but here's what we know:

  • Hampton Morris (second at 61kg) is the lone man to finish in Olympic qualifying position for the U.S., but more athletes could still receive spots as continental representation places are sorted out and other spots are potentially reallocated.
  • Four women finished in Olympic qualifying position, but Jourdan Delacruz (fourth at 49kg), Olivia Reeves (second at 71kg) and Mary Theisen-Lappen (fifth at 81+kg) have the edge based on their rankings within their respective weight classes.

Wrestling

The U.S. has earned quota spots in all six women's freestyle weight classes, but has only qualified four of six spots in men's freestyle and three of six spots in Greco-Roman. Olympic Trials were held April 19-20 at Penn State University to determine which athletes will fill those quota spots in Paris. Wrestlers who won at Trials in non-qualified weight classes will have one final opportunity to earn a quota spot at an Olympic Qualifying Tournament held in Istanbul in May.
