Overview

Shooting at the Olympic Games includes a range of events across three disciplines—rifle, pistol and shotgun—testing precision, control and consistency under pressure.

Rifle and pistol events are typically held at distances of 10m, 25m and 50m, with athletes first competing in qualification rounds before advancing to elimination-style finals where scores are reset and medals are decided shot-by-shot. Shotgun events, including trap and skeet, take place outdoors, where athletes aim at moving clay targets launched at varying angles and speeds, requiring quick reflexes and accuracy.

The sport has been part of the Olympic program since the first modern Games at the 1896 Summer Olympics and has evolved to include a broader range of events and formats, including mixed team competitions that emphasize both individual skill and partnership. Today, Olympic shooting combines traditional marksmanship with modern formats designed to heighten drama in finals, where athletes compete in head-to-head elimination stages for gold.
