Preview: Unbeaten USA eyes historic fifth straight Paralympic crown

In 2022, the United States made history, becoming the first sled hockey team to win four straight Paralympic titles. This year, the Americans earned a chance to extend that record to five.

Only three other hockey programs have won four back-to-back titles at the Olympics or Paralympics: Canada's Olympic men's team (1920, 1924, 1928, 1932), the Soviet Union's Olympic men's team (1964, 1968, 1972, 1976), and Canada's Olympic women's team (2002, 2006, 2010, 2014). Norway is the only country — aside from the United States — to make four straight Paralympic gold medal games, though it only won once, in 1998 (the United States prevented Norway from repeating as champion in 2002).

The Americans have been on a roll so far in Milan, going unbeaten across four games and outscoring opponents, 40-3. In a show of unwavering poise, they've overcome one-goal deficits twice, embarking on an unanswered scoring spree to regain the lead in eventual wins over Italy (14-1) and Czechia (6-1). In their semifinal win over Czechia on Friday, they tied the country's record for most goals scored in a single Paralympic tournament, set in 2018.

For the third Paralympics in a row, Canada stands as the United States' final obstacle on the way to gold.

Like the Americans, Canada went undefeated through its first four games in Milan, scoring 30 goals and allowing three. In its semifinal contest against China, the Canadians battled to the finish, losing and then regaining a two-goal lead to secure their spot in the title game.

If the United States wins again, it will mark the first time any country has swept all three Olympic and Paralympic hockey tournaments in one year. The country's men and women claimed double gold in the Olympic tournament in Milan in February, with both wins coming against Canada.
